Frequently Asked Questions:

CNC turning, also known as computer numerical control turning, is a machining process that involves the use of a lathe machine to shape and cut materials. It is a highly automated process that uses computer programs to control the movement of the lathe and the cutting tools. CNC turning is commonly used in the manufacturing industry to produce a wide range of components, such as shafts, bolts, and screws.

The process starts with a cylindrical workpiece that is securely clamped into the lathe. The cutting tools, which are controlled by the computer program, remove material from the workpiece with precision accuracy to create the desired shape and dimensions.

The cost of CNC turning can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the complexity of the part being turned, the material being used, the quantity of parts needed, and the level of precision required.

Typically with turned components, manufacturing costs can be reduced if automation can be factored into the machining process. This allows for bar-feeders and robotics to be introduced into the process, reducing the manual labor components and increasing efficiency overall.

At Berkeley Engineering, we use a series of machines in our CNC turning operations to suit each clients needs individually. Where possible, we utilise cost-saving measures to provide cost-effective savings and increase efficiency, leading to shorter delivery times and higher quality components overall.

We are limited to a 1,000 mm (39 in.) maximum size for parts on our platform. If you need higher dimensions, you can place the request through your account manager.

CNC turning uses the rotation of the workpiece and different cutting tools to produce a wide range of geometries, including cylindrical, conical, and complex shapes. This method is commonly used to manufacture parts with rotational symmetry, such as shafts, flanges, and pulleys. It is also efficient in creating both internal and external threads, ensuring precise threaded components perfect for screws and connecting parts.

CNC turning can perform facing operations, resulting in smooth and flat surfaces on the end face of the workpiece whilst also introducing boring operations to create accurate holes with varying diameters.

With over 22+ machines in our shop, we use a variety of CNC turning machines to best suit each client’s specs and requirements. To help keep costs down for our clients, we also obtain several bar-feeders and robotics to aid in machining automation.

Each job is unique so speaking to our technical team and obtaining a quote for your parts is always highly recommended.

Some of the machines we use for CNC turning include:

  • 8x DMG Mori lathes (NLX 4000, 2500, 1500)
  • 2x Miyano Citizen BNA42
  • 2x JF CNC JSL 32RB
  • QuickTech I-42PLUS
  • Hyundai Kia CNC
  • Bar feeder(s)
  • Robotic arm(s)

CNC turning machines are capable of handling a diverse array of materials. Whether it’s aluminum, brass, stainless steel, ABS, PVC, nylon, or even exotic materials like titanium and carbon fiber, these machines offer a wide range of options. To achieve the best outcomes, it is crucial to carefully choose the suitable cutting tools and machining parameters for each specific material.

CNC turning offers a wide range of options for finishing, allowing for various surface textures and patterns. The use of different cutting tools and techniques, combined with the precision and accuracy of CNC machines, enables the creation of detailed and intricate finishes. Whether you prefer a smooth and shiny surface or a rough and textured look, CNC turning can achieve the desired outcome.
